Humble Design: From Homeless to Hopeful

When her sister died a year later she took in her three kids and cared for them as if they were her own. She worked two jobs to keep the family afloat, and when we furnished her house, she gave the larger room to the kids and slept in the basement. She cried for the first time in years when she saw those kids jump up and down with happiness. The next day we posted her video online and a person commented “Why did she have six kids if she couldn’t pay for them? ” I cringe at all the assumptions people make about poverty in this country. A vast population in America is just one paycheck or one emergency away from calamity.

My parents also instilled in me the value of giving back — always emphasizing the importance of having empathy — walking in other people’s shoes. I suppose that’s part of the reason big transitions and decisions have never been hard for me to make. In the summer before my senior year of high school, I had the opportunity to go to Israel, and as it turned out, I stayed for my entire senior year. In Israel, I felt connected in a way I had never been before. I graduated and went to New York City to study painting and drawing at the School of Visual Arts. One day, I met an artist on the street selling these amazing paintings for just $200.

I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We don’t have a bottom line, or stockholders. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Did you face any challenges when starting the business? Of course funding is a challenge for most nonprofits, but our biggest challenge was that Humble Design became a logistics nightmare.

She found a house she could afford, but there was nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were making nests on the floor where they were going to sleep. I cried my eyes out on my way to picking up my children from day care thinking about those kids sleeping on the floor that night while I was tucking my children into their big beautiful beds. While in line at carpool, I started asking people if they had extra items they could donate. I went around with my friend Ana in her pick-up truck and started collecting items to furnish this home. We called our friends, our neighbors, called people we didn’t know — asking for beds, linens, kitchen items.

And it dawned on me, even if I could replicate the quality of his work, I’d never make it as a painter. And that was the best move I ever made because the first class I signed up for was advertising, where I met my husband, Rob. Rob moved down to Miami for a job; I stayed in New York and graduated, then followed him to Miami where we both worked in advertising for nine years. I moved to Michigan in 2008 with my husband Rob and two children, Henson and Tuesday. We have created a remarkable partnership with U-Haul which donated warehouse and trucking in all the new cities we expand to. We opened in Chicago this past year and are thankful to have partnered with CB2 (Crate and Barrel) to provide the much needed funding. We are working on our newest site in Dearborn, which will service veterans exclusively. Recently, a Microsoft employee held a fundraiser which provided us funding to expand to Seattle as well. San Diego is our fifth city and is expected to be up and running by the third quarter of this year.

Masterfully balancing attention to detail and the creation of genuine connection with colleagues and clients, she helps foster an atmosphere of creativity and collaboration. With a multidisciplinary background, Michelle first began her career in business and entertainment before returning to University of California, Los Angeles to pursue interior design. She has led the curation and tastemaking of Laney LA’s material research and applications. While her role continues to evolve over time, she is currently serving as an advisor to the leadership team, a resource to the design team, and mother and educator for her children. With a global roster from Canada to South Africa, Laney LA is a place where diverse minds gather, focused on the simultaneous pursuit of critical discourse and vibrant culture. Since its inception in 2009, Humble has turned almost 900 empty houses into clean, dignified and welcoming homes — a simple but powerful idea.

We have two movers, a warehouse manager, six designers and office staff, but we count on our volunteers to help our warehouse stay organized. We also count on corporations to adopt the houses and send their employees down for a day of service. They clean and decorate the home and get to watch the moment when the family comes home. Trained at Yasar University in Turkey, Ezgi supports the Laney LA team in her pursuit of excellence through the creation of intentional and timeless architecture. With an extensive background in project management and Archicad, Ezgi provides a unique and attentive perspective to each project.

We have specific guidelines on what kind of items we do and do not accept at our warehouses. Join our passionate team of donors and volunteers. Each of us plays an important role on our mission to stop the revolving door of homelessness. Do you have advice for those who want to start their own nonprofit? No one expects you to know everything, so ask for help. There is no shame in stating, ”I don’t now what I’m doing here.” In fact, vulnerability can be a point of strength.

Will you help us provide dignity for a familty in need and support the worthy fight against homelessness? Is there a special story or family that stands out in your mind? All of the families we help have amazing stories one way or another, but I remember a few that stood out to me because of the families’ untold sacrifices. One woman had three children and her husband died of cancer.

It took us six weeks to gather all the furniture for the house she found and to decorate it. It was exciting work, but it was a project and, when it was done, I went back Forgotten Harvest. I would come home and somebody would be delivering a crib to my garage, or leaving towels on my front porch. We want our donations to go directly to families who are in need in Detroit, and we don’t want them to have to pay for delivery. “Treger had a colleague who went into Section 8 Housing and she went by to see her.

We recycle 500,000 pounds of furniture a year out of our Pontiac location alone. Our challenge was simply managing and moving all that furniture! We are lucky to have partnered with U-Haul who has provided their trucks and donated warehouse space.

TBD We’re looking for approximately 10-15K sq ft of new warehouse space! Contact info below if you might be able to help. We love working with brands and individuals that are interested in engaging with their community in a meaningful way. Buyan began his career in finance before pursuing his passion for design at the NewSchool of Architecture in San Diego. After graduating at the top of his class, he dove into his career in the states and hasn’t looked back. Beyond his humble spirit and open curiosity, he possesses an ability to intuitively distill designs in order to catapult them even farther.

With your support, Humble Design can help set families on a course towards a bright and hopeful future. Restoring hope and dignity has a life-changing impact both for the people we help and the volunteers who make it possible. Humble Design impacts families and the environment, as well as our community of volunteers. Over 660 families in Detroit have benefited from the generosity of Humble Design's donors, volunteers and partners. With the help of the U-Haul network across North America, Humble is expanding to additional cities.

You can watch the Eagles, Phillies, Sixers Flyers and Union in a historic Philadelphia bar packed full of life-long fans that want a win more than anything. Bryan James, Andrew Dillon, and David Flagler founded the Sons of Ben supporters club on January 17, 2007, the 301st anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birthday. Philadelphia soccer fan Ethan Gomberg suggested the name.

Things were a lot different at McGillin’s back in Doyle’s early days. The bar only took cash, allowed smoking, and charged 45 cents for a mug of Genny Cream Ale. He didn’t see active combat, but the experience — his first outside of Philadelphia — changed his life. He’s still able to easily recite Korean words and phrases, and recalls with fondness the people he met there. Doyle, who lives in Andorra, was born in South Philly and raised in the Tasker Homes, where he was the middle child of seven in an Irish-Catholic family. Doyle was so stoic and observant that the staff thought he was a cop.

The tavern grew to include the oyster house next door, the back alley/washroom and the house upstairs. It’s a long weekend and that means one more night to party at McGillin’s. We realize that wait times are sometimes long & thank you for your patience.

"The truth is the people, I love meeting people." In 2013, Gourmet magazine called McGillin's one of the three coolest bars in the United States. This month marks 50 years for Doyle at McGillin’s, which opened on Drury Street near 13th in 1860, and in true Philly fashion, the bar is throwing a yearlong party in his honor. He started going to the storied Center City bar regularly on Friday nights in the early ‘70s, when his wife would go to her mother’s house to do laundry. Billing itself as the bar that “outlasted the Civil War and even Prohibition,” McGillin’s Old Ale House, the oldest continuously operating bar in Philadelphia, is a major point of pride for natives of the city. After Irish immigrants Catherine and William McGillin opened the Bell in Hand Tavern in 1860, it gradually became known only as “McGillin’s” by regulars. You’ll find every liquor license since 1871, the year that construction on Philadelphia’s City Hall started just two blocks from the establishment, hanging on the wall.

Please respect our residential neighbors by keeping noise to a minimum on the patio or around the food trucks. Due to Culver City Municipal Code this is a 21+ establishment. We’ll celebrate the way Ma McGillin always did – by giving out carnations. In 1936, on her 89th & last birthday, she gave out nearly 4,000 carnations.

In 1910, the bar celebrated its 50th anniversary with a new brick facade and officially changed its name to McGillin’s Olde (the "e" seems to have been dropped in recent years) Ale House. Catherine “Ma” McGillin, who had taken over operation of the establishment after her husband passed away in 1901, managed to carry the bar through Prohibition by hiring a chef. She served food and ice cream on the first floor and “tea” (i.e. bootleg liquor) on the second.

Multi-color flowers are perched on the window sill, and the neon sign “McGillin's Olde Ale House” hangs proudly from the top of the building. Philadelphia’s history is some of the most fascinating in the United States. Not only did our city lay the framework for the founding of our country, but we set precedents with our shops, architecture, bars, restaurants, and more. It’s no surprise then that the oldest bar in Philadelphia has a fascinating history, and it remains one of Philly’s go-to spots nearly 160 years after it opened. Ma McGillin finally passed away in 1937 at the ripe old age of 90, passing management of McGillin’s along to her daughter, Mercedes McGillin Hooper, one of 13 children to be raised on the bar’s second floor.

McGillin’s is known for being a place where people gather to celebrate milestones, big or small.

‎Your Mom's House with Christina P and Tom Segura: Make America Laugh Again w David Lucas on Apple Podcasts

podcast your mom's house

They read listener feedback about the show expressing gratitude and horror. The main mommies also respond to an email from a fellow dog breedist. YMH regular Josh Potter then joins Tim and Crystal on the couch to discuss Reese McGuire, Charles Haley, Kellen Winslow Jr., and the indecent acts that tie them all together. Jean and Jean wrap up the show by calling Top Dog and watching some of Christina's TikTok curations. The jeans are getting pulled completely over your head this week with Tom Segura and Christina P! Now that J Nadav is C Patty, the main mommies try to teach him about Christmas and what it's all about.

Wildest Lifestyles w/ Moshe Kasher Your Mom's House Ep. 745

On this week's episode of YMH, Tom Segura and Christina P discuss Instagram's new pronoun feature, why summer sucks if you're fat, and take look at new videos from Garth Brooks and Cobra Tate. On this week's YMH, Tom Segura and Christina P discuss how CP got pink eye, their son, Ellis, bringing home a toad, the Netflix show "Halston," and more. They watch a video of polyamorous human dogs, some more "point of privilege" clips, and Christina's TikTok curations. It's a very special episode of Your Mom's House today as Insane Clown Posse's Shaggy and his co-host from the Palcast, The Creep, stop by! First off, Tom and Christina discuss pitching a heroin hotel to Shark tank, the lost conversation with Dr. Joe Kort about being gay, straight or bisexual and take a walk down memory lane with Christina's old comedy tour posters.

Hate From YMH w/ Mark Normand and Caitlin Campbell

What happened in May of 2021 was that I was playing a joke on stage with someone who knew me and knew my style. And it was a time in which I think being a victim was looked at — as a — I don’t want to say a good thing, but it was something that people were utilizing to get their own names out there. I had a crazy childhood in a rough, tough neighborhood.

Every Comic's Favorite Comedian w/Dave Attell

Nate Bargatze is a comedian and the host of the "Nateland" podcast. Today on Your Mom's House, Christina P joins the show from home because of her ankle injury. Her and Tom Segura talk about how she injured her ankle, and give an update on how recovery is going. After that, comedian Ian Bagg stops by to talk about Canadian tendencies, doing a gig after getting injured and hotel shower doors.

Getting Clarity w/ Jimmy Eat World The Danny Brown Show

He joins the Main Mommies to discuss the beginning of "To Catch a Predator," the most memorable chomos he's busted, Peter Nygard, and other stories he's currently working on. Tom and Christina introduce him to YMH All-Stars Robert Paul Champagne and Fedsmoker. Most episodes feature original music from fans that often incorporate samples from the videos played on the show.

In this episode of YMH, Tom Segura and Christina P discuss the film "The Secrets We Keep," Armie Hammer's cool leaked DMs, and The Night Stalker Netflix documentary. They also do a deep dive on Matthew McConaughey's Instagram and watch this week's batch of CP's TikToks. George Perez is a comedian and host of the George Perez Stories podcast.

Will Tom & Christina Be On Jeopardy?! Your Mom's House Ep. 752

They watch a guy confess to a cop UNPROMPTED, a cool scientist, and a girl flubbing Bert Kreischer's name. Christina P zooms in from Austin, Texas to chat with Tom Segura about names that would suck to have, Nadav taking his lunch home in a trash bag, what his Christian name should be, Austin chit chat, the show "Couples Therapy," and more. They watch a cool video of Rajneesh discussing democracy. Comedians are watching comedians do comedy on “Kill Tony.” I’m using a pro wrestling model.

Double Soul Shaman w/ Josh Potter & Will Blunderfield Your Mom's House Ep. 750

Johnny Pemberton had made multiple appearances and regularly contributes graphics to the show. The newest addition is "First Date" hosted by Lauren Compton. But Hinchcliffe is not without controversy. In May 2021, more than a year into the pandemic, Hinchcliffe found his way into the eye of the cancel culture storm. A racial slur hurled at fellow comedian and Asian American Peng Dang during a gig in Austin catapulted him into a whirlwind of backlash.

You cannot bring up that kind of subject matter.” I think people must realize that we are professionals. And yes, sure, we deal with the repercussions of what happens. When it comes to the next generation, we’re seeing TikTok creators transitioning from funny videos to stand-up comedy, which isn’t always an easy bridge to cross. I’m looking forward to being the Netflix outlier. We surprised the industry when we put our tickets on sale for the YouTube theater, and they sold out in a couple of hours.

This week Tom Segura and Christina P start off with discussing twins, if Tom actually has fun, and the differences between how the main mommies raise the boys. We open the show with a clip of a super cool guy hitting on ladies at the gym and causing a scene. We then watch clips of a lunatic crusading for acceptance and understanding of a super stigmatized group, an enraged Uber driver, and we talk about wild bumper sticker culture.

Tom shares videos of some cool coaches with Tony, and Tony reveals what it was like to realize he was going to be in the hall of fame, the best cities to party in, and the first expensive thing he bought. Tom Segura is out of the studio for this episode, but Zooms in to chat with Christina P about his injury, peeing in jars, and CP's dental accident. They watch recent videos from TikTok all-star The King, as well as a helicopter "horrible or hilarious" video. They also answer listener-submitted "Ask Mommy Anything" questions.

We discuss the new move of HoneyDew to it’s own channel and then get into some of the most disgusting YMH content we may have ever seen. This episode leaves everyone in a heap of tears and nausea. Again, very tough to describe in words what was just witnessed. Charo then joins them to take a look at some clips of her from the live show that she has no recollection of. She gets to rewatch the garage video and is reintroduced to "Ed." Will she like them as much the second time?

Anything can happen and it’s ridiculously exciting. You could watch someone’s entire life change in front of your eyes. Everybody that we pull out of that bucket has a chance. Moving to Los Angeles in 2007, he made a name for himself at clubs for insulting both the audience and other comics and being willing to broach any topic, no matter how sensitive. He began opening for comics like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross; the latter helped Hinchcliffe land writing gigs on “Comedy Central Roast,” where he penned Martha Stewart’s raunchy zingers for Justin Bieber, among others. In 2013, he launched his podcast “Kill Tony” with co-host Brian Redban.

They watch videos of a failed citizen's arrest, a Master of Accents of a 107 year old Irish farmer, some of The King's greatest hits, and a batch of CP's TikToks. I knew that what I had done was not wrong. It wasn’t even the worst thing I did that week.

Devastated by the fire and with his health declining, Cyrus Gale sold the property to his son Arthur, who designed the current Eagle Mountain House in Colonial Revival style and selected Roswell  Ward of Intervale to complete the construction. To reduce the risk of the new hotel experiencing the same fate as the first and many others of the era, Arthur installed the first fire suppression system in a New Hampshire resort. Under Arthur Gale's ownership, the hotel doubled in size with an addition to the southern end completed in 1929, matching the design and materials used in the original construction. Found in the heart of the White Mountains, the Eagle Mountain House & Golf Club sits on a scenic hilltop in Jackson, New Hampshire.

(Other changes he implemented involved installing such iconic features like the expansive verandah and historic elevator.) But Arthur’s momentous stewardship of the Eagle Mountain House came to an unfortunate end with his death in 1957. His sister, Marcia Gale Chadbourne, and her family carried on his legacy for the next few decades, until her retirement during the 1970s. The Chadbournes subsequently sold their interest in the resort to a new ownership group, thus marking the end of nearly 90 years of continuous operation by the same family. Nevertheless, the Eagle Mountain House managed to preserve its fantastic reputation.

Golf was quickly increasing in popularity and in 1931, Arthur converted a portion of the property’s farmland and pasture into a nine-hole golf course. Today, the Eagle Mountain House Golf Club leases the course from local ownership and is responsible for maintenance and operation during the golf season. In the winter, the course serves as a vital section of the nationally acclaimed Jackson Ski Touring Foundation’s extensive cross-country trail network. The Chadbournes continued to operate the property and make improvements. In addition, the original hotel rooms were renovated to include private baths and in 1959, the swimming pool was added. With the Chadbournes’ retirement in 1973, the hotel left Gale family ownership for the first time in over 90 years when it was sold to the Clarkes and Kenyons.

Then in 1973, Arthur Gale's sister Marcia and her husband Orin N. Chadbourne, who had owned and managed it since Arthur's death in 1957, sold the property. The building first opened its doors at the start of the Gilded Age, when the surrounding White Mountains were rapidly transforming into a premier vacation hotspot. Artists in particular were among the people to visit the most frequently, often staying in barns while seeking unique natural landmarks to paint. Recognizing the economic potential all those tourists represented, local entrepreneurs began to construct their own inns and hotels. Two people to pursue this line of work were Cyrus and Marcia Gale, who converted their family’s farmhouse in Jackson, New Hampshire, into a hotel called the “Eagle Mountain House” during the 1870s. The Gale’s farm quickly became one of the most popular places to stay in the region, especially since it was located deep in the wilderness. In fact, most guests could only reach the retreat after following a trail that cut deep through the verdant woodland outside of downtown Jackson.

The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line ships and itineraries

norwegian cruise ships

Unveiled in 2019, Norwegian Encore is, notably, the 23rd biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story's publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have significantly more bigger vessels. Unlike most bigger Norwegian ships, neither of the vessels has a private The Haven suite complex or solo cabins. If you sail on Pride of America, you'll find such one-of-a-kind eateries as the classic American car-themed Cadillac Diner. You'll also find some of Norwegian's signature offerings, including a Cagney's steak house and Italian eatery La Cucina.

The Best Cruise Lines

On the line's Breakaway-, Breakaway Plus- and Epic-class ships, you'll find giant waterslides and kiddie splash zones and, in some cases, even more over-the-top attractions such as go-kart tracks and laser tag arenas. What you'll find on the top decks of Norwegian ships will vary quite a bit depending on the vessel. The line's smaller ships will have at least one or two pools, sunning areas and usually a sports court area — but not all that much else. Among added features, it includes a 45-minute escape room experience laced with special effects.

Extraordinary Journeys

By this deal, on the newbuild Norwegian Encore (2019) was introduced fleet's first "Onda by Scarpetta" - specialty restaurant offering dining premium experiences fleetwide. The new restaurant joins Scarpetta's land-based restaurants in NYC, The Hamptons (Long Island NY), Miami FL, Philadelphia PA, Newport RI, Las Vegas NV, and London OH. "Onda by Scarpetta" restaurant's menu showcases the unique flavors of modern Italian cuisine featuring a selection of beautifully presented seafood and signature dishes, including daily handmade pasta and traditional gourmet desserts.

Norwegian Viva

On ships with water slides, ropes courses, go-kart tracks and laser tag, these are also popular and often require a wait of up to 30 minutes or more. There's no formal dress code at night either, though most people do change into something slightly less casual for dinner. Additionally, some of the specialty extra-fee restaurants do require long pants, collared shirts and closed-toe shoes.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America. The cabins measure just 100 square feet but are superbly designed to maximize storage space. They're also clustered around the exclusive Studio Lounge, which has its own private bar and a television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings. Tucked away in the middle of the ship, this "studio" zone is essentially a private escape for solos, with more solo cabins — 128 — than you'll find on any other ship at sea.

At around 143,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all eight currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut). While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis-class ships, Norwegian's Breakaway Plus-class vessels are firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants. They are the Norwegian ships most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions. There are so many of these things that you won't be able to do it all in a single, weeklong cruise.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is one of the top players in large-ship cruising, and its fleet is seeing one of its biggest refits in decades with its new Prima fleet of ships. Norwegian Cruise Line ships are also known for their colorful hull art that makes them stand out in ports around the world. From May through to September 2025, Norwegian Prima sails a series of 10-and-11-day voyages from London (Southampton), England UK and Reykjavik (Iceland) offering itineraries calling to Geiranger, Norway, home to Geirangerfjord. The itineraries also call to Alesund, Flam, Bergen, Brussels/Bruges (Zeebrugge), Akureyri, Isafjordur, and Amsterdam.

The two itineraries call to bucket-list destinations like Ibiza, Cagliari, Naples, Rome (Civitavecchia), Cannes, and more. In November 2022, NCL Norwegian Joy offers passengers a Bahamian winter escape on 5- and 7-day roundtrip sailings from New York City featuring overnights at the Royal Naval Dockyard. NCL Getaway also offers 5-night voyages (December 2022 and February-March 2023).

I love its stylish design and upscale feel, as well as its wide mix of eateries, bars and entertainment. Two ships in this Epic class were ordered by NCL in November 2006, with an option for a third vessel that was not exercised. If you're on a tight budget, there are plenty of included-in-the-fare choices for dining and entertainment. If money is no object, you can follow a different "journey" through the ship, as Norwegian executives like to say, to a far more high-end vacation.

All its ships are flagged to the Bahamas, except for the Pride of America, which operates cruises within the United States and is flagged and registered in the US, as well as being owned by a US-registered subsidiary, NCL America. Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your purchase when paying for the cruise by using a card that offers extra points for travel purchases. Norwegian designs its ships to appeal to a broad mix of people, in part by offering a wide range of cabin types at varying price points.

Norwegian is known for offering a wide range of accommodations on its ships. You'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless inside cabins that measure as little as 135 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that are more than 50 times that size. In general, they appeal to cruisers looking for a more intimate experience on a cruise ship than what you'll find on the big Norwegian ships. They also draw cruisers who care more about the destinations that they visit on a cruise than onboard attractions.

With 18 world class vessels, Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the most nimble and contemporary fleets in the industry. Fourteen ships are divided among five different classes, including the Sun, Dawn, Jewel, Breakaway and Breakaway Plus Class. Norwegian Epic, Pride of America and Norwegian Spirit are in their own classes, adding to the brand’s variety of vessels. You can also find some old-school cruising style on the eldest ship in the fleet, which debuted in 1999. Here are the NCL cruise ships by age, so you can pick the right fit for your upcoming cruise.

If you're sure Norwegian is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Norwegian's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand. A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage. In contrast to airline frequent-flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year. But it's not as difficult as it might at first seem to hit the more rewarding higher tiers in just a few years if you're cruising a lot.

Ocean Liners VS Cruise Ships- Everything You Wanted To Know

ocean liner vs cruise ship

This design was intended to attract wealthy passengers with the elegance and opulence typical of high-end Edwardian architecture. For comparison, Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas has a gross tonnage of around 228,081—nearly five times larger than the Titanic. The world’s largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas, has a gross tonnage of 248,663. Even Carnival’s smallest ship, the Carnival Elation, has a gross tonnage of 70,367, far surpassing the Titanic. The size and power of an ocean liner means it can travel further more quickly, which is great when you want to see more diversity on a single trip. For instance, when you’re exploring a destinations like Costa Rica or the Med, you might want to hop around as many idyllic ports as possible.

As a result, cruise lines have adapted by designing taller ships with multiple decks, rather than extending their length. In contrast, cruise ships are focused on leisure and entertainment, providing a vacation experience with stops at various ports of call. They are like floating resorts with numerous amenities such as swimming pools, theaters, restaurants, and sometimes even ice-skating rinks or climbing walls. The journey on a cruise ship is meant to be as enjoyable as the destinations themselves, with activities and entertainment available throughout the day and night. The lower profile shape of a river ship means guests are closer to the water than ocean liners, arguably giving passengers a better eye-level view as they journey from port to port. Unlike a cruise ship, where guests opportunely relax for weeks at sea, ocean liners are built for speed.

Q4: Are Cruises Suitable for Families with Children?

In contrast, third-class accommodations were smaller, consisting primarily of bunk beds in small, cramped rooms without the luxurious amenities found in first-class. This number is quite low compared to the capacity of today’s cruise ships. For example, the Icon of the Seas has a passenger capacity of 7,600, while the Wonder of the Seas can accommodate 7,084 passengers. Even smaller modern ships like the Carnival Vista far surpass the Titanic with a maximum passenger capacity of 4,977.

Cunard eventually painted Mauretania white to help with the heat, but she was retired shortly thereafter in 1934. They were designed with an emphasis on capacity rather than comfort, and they were expensive to build and operate, being engineered with strong materials to weather extreme conditions. Until the 1950s, the only way for anyone to cross the oceans was by ship (think Titanic). Ocean liners served the role of transporting passengers between continents reliably and on time, no matter the weather.

The Ocean Liner Experience

ocean liner vs cruise ship

A lot of people get confused since “ocean liner” and “cruise ship” are basically the same thing. However, it is important to recognize that these two types of vessels serve different purposes and have distinct characteristics. While ocean liners are designed for transportation from one point to another, cruise ships focus on providing recreational and leisure experiences for their passengers. This fundamental difference in purpose shapes the design, features, and overall experience of each type of ship. “An ocean liner could…be used as a cruise ship, but not all cruise ships can be used as ocean liners,” the Marine Insight website notes. Ocean liners tend to be built with thicker steel and sit lower in the water to withstand rough weather and sea conditions.

This is particularly important to me, as I do suffer from seasickness. She’s such an elegant ship and she deals very well with the bad weather that you often get in the Atlantic. More than 5,000 pieces of bespoke artwork fill the walls, with many wonderful images of Cunard and White Star ships from times gone by. I know it isn’t always like that, but the Queen Mary’s design certainly makes her better equipped to deal with rough seas.

It is presently immortalised as a floating hotel in Dubai since 2018, showcasing to the general public and passenger ship enthusiasts Cunard’s rich tradition and history with ocean liners. When it comes to speed, the Titanic was a relatively fast ocean liner for its time. Speed was an important factor for transatlantic liners like the Titanic, which aimed to reduce travel time between Europe and North America. Today, the entertainment options on cruise ships are extensive and much more diverse. Passengers can enjoy Broadway-style shows, live music concerts, film screenings, an ice-skating rink, water slides, and even simulated surfing.

Ship Design and Construction

ocean liner vs cruise ship

The size of a river ship makes it suitable for exclusive events or themed cruises. Ocean liners offer inside cabins as an option, which means guests who book these get no window, let alone a balcony. However, these can be a cost-effective option if you plan to spend more time out of the stateroom than in. A cruise holiday is perfect for exploring a region in the most effortless way possible.

Onboard Experience and Atmosphere

The fastest ocean liner still in service is the famous Queen Mary 2, with a top speed of 30 knots (35mph) – faster than any modern cruise ship. Cruising on an ocean liner is like traveling on a modern cruise ship. The luxury cruise line Cunard Line strictly enforces dress codes and has established times for dining. Historically, it prides itself on owning and running some of the fastest and biggest ocean liners of their times. Also, ocean liners cost more due to the more rigid construction and speed requirements than cruise ships.

However, it’s with today’s advanced technology and safety protocols, incidents of ships sinking are quite rare. Despite the increase in ship sizes, the difference in length between the Titanic and many modern cruise ships isn’t as large as it seems. For example, Royal Caribbean’s smallest ship, the Majesty of the Seas, is 879 ft. long (268 m), which is 3 ft. shorter than the Titanic. The average length of a cruise ship today is around 1,000 ft. (304 m). This shows that despite modern ships being larger, the average length hasn’t increased by much since the Titanic.

The onboard experience is often characterized by formal dining, sophisticated entertainment, and refined amenities. Cruise ships, on the other hand, provide a diverse range of activities, entertainment options, and dining choices, catering to different tastes and preferences. While ocean liners are no longer the primary mode of transportation, several retired vessels have found new life as floating hotels.

Until air transportation became common, travel between continents was undertaken by sea, using ocean liners. Today’s ocean liners are a testament to advancements in maritime engineering and hospitality, offering a blend of luxury, adventure, and technology. When deciding between an ocean liner and a cruise ship, it’s important to consider the journey’s duration, destinations, and personal preferences in travel style. Cruise ships, on the other hand, are primarily designed for leisure and entertainment, focusing on the cruise experience itself rather than the transportation aspect. During the day, however, casual attire, the same as on any other cruise line, is accepted.

One of the key differences between ocean liners and cruise ships is speed. Ocean liners were designed for speed, with powerful engines that could propel them across the ocean at impressive speeds. Cruise ships, on the other hand, prioritize comfort over speed, with cruising speeds that are much slower than those of ocean liners. On the other hand, modern cruise ships adhere to strict international safety laws that require enough lifeboats for everyone on board. Ocean liners were primarily designed to transport passengers and cargo between continents reliably and efficiently.
