The cabin was big, especially compared to our recent cabin on Emerald Princess. Princess does not offer a chair in a standard cabin any more, let alone a couch like we had on Venezia. I thought it was odd that the couch on Venezia was cheaply finished in orange vinyl, but I later realized there was probably supposed to be a fabric slipcover that the cabin attendant did not want to deal with. There were drawers under the couch that were broken or off the tracks. We asked the attendant to get it fixed, but he only “proved” to us it could be opened with great force. There was a false fingernail in the drawer from a past passenger trying to open it.

I too cruise mostly Princess and Celebrity but last summer, I tried Carnival after a 30 year absence. I agree with most of your comments and observations. I now have three Carnival cruises booked for 2024, the shortest of which is 10 days, so the line is doing something good!

Carnival’s accessible price-point and high-quality entertainment also works in favor of multigenerational travel. I’m sure the comedians don’t like seeing people walk out. Production shows and guest musicians use recorded backing tracks instead of live music like most other cruises I've been on. The production cast seemed small (8) and the singing ability varied from bad to good.

Sticking to off-hours for dining and getting up early for morning coffee helped, as did making Deck 5, with its four hot tubs and relatively underutilized lounge chairs, our sunning headquarters. The cheer of the crew also kept us going; with a room steward that brought us copious amounts of ice and towel animals, as well as an outgoing entertainment staff, it was hard to stay irritated for too long. For free eats, Carnival’s Lido Marketplace buffet on Deck 16 and its two main dining rooms – Festivale on Deck 6 and 7 aft, and Carnivale on Deck 6 midship – offer all the classic foods cruisers have come to expect. While the buffet is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, dining rooms tend to be dinner-only affairs, save for sea days when Carnival’s popular Sea Day Brunch (reservations required) is offered.
Also, the app does not provide practical info about things like gangway location, time changes, tendering process, disembarkation. Perhaps the paper does not have this info either, but I still prefer paper. Those looking for a comparable itinerary and family-friendly vibe without the crowds are often drawn to Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, which is slightly bigger and carries fewer passengers. Cabins on Mariner are more stylish and family entertainment is somewhat more impressive, but prices can be a little bit higher on Royal Caribbean’s cruise liner. Carnival is a line that harmoniously brings people from all walks of life together. In elevators, when returning to the ship from port visits, in the eateries and at shows, by the pools — you name it — most guests, despite such varied backgrounds and identities, were happy to converse and share in the fun.
To be fair, Carnival should make it easier to indicate multiple passengers or that space is needed for wheelchairs/scooters. I am willing to believe the engineers did the math and the average wait is shorter this way, but passengers may not individually perceive that. What it all adds up to is a Carnival cruise experience that delivers the affordable Fun Ship experience that people love, with a dash of sophistication that never crosses the line into snooty.
